UP Naming Mahal

If you are in the office and one or even two of your co-worker are on leave or you hear someone singing UP Naming Mahal do not be suprised. Today is the kick off the University of the Philippines Centennial Celebration.

I literally and figuratively grew up in the University of the Philippines. As a child, a high school student, a college student and a graduate student I was there. It was a second home of sorts. But that is another story for another day.

Work prevents me from going to all the events. Most likely I will be able to join and witness the last two events.

And I thought I would not hear the school song for sometime. Although, I am not really a fan of the new version. I like the one that was etched into my mind since the day I entered UP Integrated School; or when I graduated from the Institute of Aquaculture, College of Fisheries, UP in the Visayas; and the day I graduated from Institute of Library and Information Science. Of course countless of Alumni Reunions.

U.P. naming mahal, pamantasang hirang
Ang tinig namin, sana’y iyong dinggin
Malayong lupain, amin mang marating
Di rin magbabago ang damdamin
Di rin magbabago ang damdamin.

Luntian at pula, Sagisag magpakailanman
Ating ipagdiwang, bulwagan ng dangal
Humayo’t itanghal, giting at tapang
Mabuhay ang pag-asa ng bayan
Mabuhay ang pag-asa ng bayan.

The medievals called her Alma Mater. Like your own mater, you can’t escape her. So despite the graduation ceremony the medievals long realized you really can’t leave the university. Nobody can!

So us Diliman brats have so much to celebrate, look forward and reassess where we went astray! An famous alum like you need not give cash to the alum association. You can render service by lecturing at the library school!

Or better yet give an endownment to my professorial chair, or lab! :)

Happy 100th year of the University of the Philippines!
