Aquarium survival tips - Blackout

Metro Manila and nearly the whole Luzon lost power with the onslaught of typhoon Milenyo or Xangsane. According to the latest news reports, electrical power in Metro Manila will be fully restored by Sunday (according to Meralco). So how are your fishes and aquariums? So far I have no casualty nor problems. Fishes in the ponds and in the aquarium seem to be doing well: So far no fish kills. The presence of plants the stocking rate could be the reason the fishes are doing well. Nearly all of my tanks and ponds are extensively stocked or have a well developed natural filter system, ie plants.

Sharks

Monteray Bay Aquarium visitors are getting a rare treat. They get to see a white Shark that has started to take its first bites of food ever since it has been captured. The white shark is attracting a record number of visitors , 17000. Read it here.

Cracker’s love for Bettas

Piscinarii.com interviews Brian Santos (aka Cracker) one of the more succesful Filipino Betta fancier and breeder. Brian is known internationally and locally for his skills in breeding fancy and fighter bettas. He has a website called Cracker Bettas and its full of information for those interested in keeping Bettas.

I first met him when he gave a talk about his experience in taking care of fighter bettas and I ended up buying a fighter betta from him. The fighter is still alive and doing well. Anyway, Brian was kind enough to participate in the interview and provide us some tips.

Steve Irwin is dead

Almost all the fans of Steve Irwin AKA the Crocodile Hunter would have heard the news by now. Irwin met his untimely demise while shooting a documentary among Stingrays in Australia. According to Dr Geoff Isbister, a clinical toxicologist and expert in bites and stings, Irwin’s death was caused by the trauma of being stung, more than the injection of lethal venom. Isbister said:

What happened to Steve Irwin is like being stabbed in the heart. It has little to do with the venom and all to do with the trauma caused by the barb of the stingray,
