Adventures with the XA1

I took this shot with an Olympus XA1 - a ultra compact film camera designed by the famous camera designer of Olympus cameras Yoshihisa Maitani, his other works include the half frame model Pen, and a host of other cameras, here is a link to his fan site. The Olympus XA series are cameras that can easily be carried in a pocket. The most famous model the Olympus XA is actually a rangefinder and was said to be then the camera carried by professional photographers when on holiday or vacation. Easy to carry and silent the camera is great for taking snaps. Anyway, I took this shot while riding the MRT yesterday, it is a bit alarming - especially if you develop the film and crop it like this…

Ducat and the bus

Thus endeth the tale of the field trip that was curtailed in favor of a ten hour hostage situation. It made the news yesterday, It was the news. As predicted the situation was resolved just in time for the news. Thankfully, no one suffered, especially the children, but this is a case of grossly abusing, even to the point of trampling, the trust a parent gives to a school or in this case a day care center. Never has the phrase In Loco Parentis been abused and debased in such manner.

As a result of this event a lot of talk has been circulating about the state of Filipino society and culture. Discussions that have been discussed before and well discussed: an old familiar road. There was something though about the event that struck me most as odd, especially the resolution.

Statistics and Opinion

The danger of accepting without question. There is an inherent danger in accepting as gospel truth opinion and statistics. The danger comes not out of the veracity or soundness of the opinion or set of statistics but with the lack of it being untested, untried, and unverified. This quite true in the realm of politics and society when opinion and statistics are weapons to be used, have been used, and will be used to sway the public to one’s cause.
