The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN is a community of nations in Southeast Asia composed by the countries Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Myanmar, Lao, and Cambodia.
ASEAN focuses mainly on the improvement of countries in the economic, social, cultural, technological, and educational aspects. The ASEAN improves on these fields with the cooperation of its member states.
The ASEAN has improved the economic situations of countries by providing a free flow of trade, enabling the export and import of different products through the member states smoothly for citizens to enjoy. And, by letting its citizens visit the member states without having to apply for a visa, ASEAN thereby improves the tourism, and as a result, the economy of its member states.
Socially, ASEAN enables member states to interact with each other and pick up on new ideas and adapt to the rapidly changing society. This goes hand-in-hand with culture, where citizens of member states immerse themselves and experience the different cultures if the ASEAN member states, allowing creativity and unity between Asian countries.
Technologically and educationally, ASEAN allows for the rapid spread of new technology between states, making education easier and more interesting. This allows countries to evolve and adapt to the ever-changing world.
These benefits don’t seem to be obvious to us, but they became possible because of ASEAN. The ASEAN is indeed a community of countries quietly working to make loud positive changes.

I marvel at how the ASEAN binds together incredibly diverse neighboring countries. More than anything else, ASEAN promotes unity in our similarities and celebration in our differences. It’s paved the way for its members to have stronger intercultural understanding and to recognize a community beyond their own.

Having traveled a couple of countries across the South East Asian nation, I had come to realize that ASEAN is all about integration and cooperation. I first learned about the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at school. It’s history and our country’s role as a founding member was one of the main discussion points in our discussion.
Further information on each country members’ were discussed in one of my major courses, Anthropology 114: Archaeology of Southeast Asia and Oceania. From there, I realized that long
before the establishment of ASEAN and even prior to the emergence of states, SEA countries had already been interacting with each other. Cultures were diffused from various origins, moving along between and among paths of trade and interaction among various areas, which made the early prehistoric cultural sequences of SEA countries similar and interconnected.
With its 10-member states, the organization has strived to improve the lives of its constituents through numerous programs, agreements, and policies. For someone who has experienced severe floods due to countless storms throughout the years, assistance from ASEAN as well as through its member countries is a huge help. Aside from that, ASEAN has helped me realize that our country still has a chance at uniting for the betterment of the citizens–for despite the cultural differences of ASEAN’s member states, the organization managed to collectively guide each other towards economic, political, cultural, and academic progress.

A – s ASEAN celebrates its 50th anniversary, let us take a look back on what it has accomplished.
S – ince it was established in 1967 with the goal of unity and peace, it has grown from five countries to ten, introducing free trade agreements and establishing the ASEAN Economic Community.
E – ach of us Filipinos has definitely had our life helped by the ASEAN. As the head of the ASEAN Studies Center Tang Siew Mun says, “ASEAN is the only actor in the whole world that can bring China, Korea, Japan, United States, and India in the same room to talk. That’s the unique role that ASEAN can play.” Its function affects the well-being of each of us.
A – iming for growth, social responsibility and other important principles like cooperation and respect within its members, there is no doubt that ASEAN is necessary. No country can stand alone.
N – ow, this 2017, what’s next for ASEAN? With Philippines as this year’s chairman, we can have a closer look at its conferences and summits and be more involved to help in carrying out its purpose. Next up: global change. Let us “partner for change engaging the world!”

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN was established in order to promote economic growth, cultural development and overall security among its members. It could be seen as a very peaceful and friendly treaty among these relatively small countries, and an agreement like this is certainly helpful for everyone. Fostering mutual assistance, collaborations and beneficial cooperation, the ASEAN has brought several advantages among its members. Some of these advantages are mostly dealing with the economic development since the ASEAN caused cheaper trades, more investments, and at the same time, employment, and innovations caused by healthy competitions in technological advancements. More specifically, trades were made easier with mutually agreed regulations, and wider market which all in all help in raising both GDP and GNP of these countries.
However, the effects in the economy does not directly affect me unless I engage in business or become an enthusiast of these foreign products. As someone who likes traveling, the agreements on peace and stability among these countries would help me out more. Knowing that there is no long and tedious visa application in order to travel to another country. Additionally, when I get to these countries, I would feel secured even in foreign grounds since I could freely get information about the place during the planning of my journey due to free flow of data about cultures in between the ASEAN countries. There is also an assurance of peace and protection outside my motherland. All these make the countries a good top list of travel places to go to.

I’d like to share my experiences, learning about Southeast Asia through this very interactive class I took in the University of the Philippines. The course was entitled “Southeast Asian Emporiums” or SEA30. It was a very interesting class and really helped me appreciate Southeast Asia more, as well as find a new appreciation for my country, the Philippines. We learned all about the various cultural customs, religions, and arts and crafts of each Southeast Asian country. My favorite was when they had an invited instructor who taught us traditional Javanese social dances. One thing that I remembered the most in that class was how grounded each step was, and how precise and elegant the movements were. The instructor told us that Southeast Asian dance emphasizes the dancer’s connection with the earth, which is why the feet are planted firmly on the ground, as opposed to Western dances where they are more “air-borne” in their steps, with energetic leaps and twirls. Another wonderful activity we did was retelling the story of the celestial maiden, which almost all Southeast Asian culture has in different versions. We did a shadow puppet theater, just like those of Indonesian shadow puppets. However, my most favorite learning experience was learning about the various food of Southeast Asia, and how their environment and geography has a direct impact on their cuisine.
Because of this unique opportunity to learn all about Southeast Asia, I’ve come to understand the relationship of the Philippines with the rest of Southeast Asia. For the longest time, I’ve always thought that the Philippines was the odd one out of Southeast Asia, with is largely Western influences still prevailing today. However, the ethnic and indigenous groups of the Philippines have very similar customs with Indonesia and the cuisine with countries like Vietnam. Indeed, the Philippines is definitely part of Southeast Asia and it has made me even more interested about my own country, as well as Southeast Asia. I am grateful for ASEAN for having such open relations with the Philippines, because our cultures are branches of the same tree, and it was a thrilling experience to study about them.

When I think of how ASEAN has helped my life, I first think of how the partnerships formed by it have given me and my family much convenience upon our travels. It allowed us to travel to SEA without a VISA (for a certain time) and it also ensured our safety in those countries. This is extremely relevant because my family has recently been interested in visiting Southeast Asian countries. Because of this accessibility, we were definitely encouraged to visit countries in SEA first before countries in other regions. In fact, we were able to visit Malaysia and Singapore last year, while my parents were able to visit Vietnam. Our travels to these countries ran smoothly and it was very easy to coordinate.
Visiting these countries in SEA has definitely enriched my knowledge about the culture of our neighboring countries. I was thrilled that I was able to see different sights and learn about those sights as well. In Malaysia, I was ecstatic to climb up the stairs to the Batu Caves and experience the Hindu religion. I was glad to have been able to do this because the Philippines has nothing like those caves. It was also very interesting to interact with different races and religions in Malaysia, because the population was a mixture of Chinese, Indian, and Muslim people. From those interactions, I learned to become more sensitive towards other cultures, while at the same time, I also learned about their behaviors, beliefs, and ways of life. On the other hand, in Singapore, I learned that the success of a country does not depend on its size. For a tiny country, I was in awe about how Singapore was so industrialized and modern. I guess this gave me hope about what our country can be if we model the disciplined Singaporeans and their honest government. My favorite learnings from both trips, however, was about their food culture. Trying out different kinds of food was definitely a sensory experience to remember.
My exposure to a few parts of SEA has made me realize that the culture in this region is unique and cannot be found in other places. Where else would you find temples as large as the Angkor Wat? Where else can you have the best Laksa, Pho, and Nasi Goreng? Where in the world can you find a population with diverse peoples that mix together and produce a colorful and unique culture? After realizing all this, my interest about the region has definitely peaked and I am now highly encouraged to visit other neighboring countries in SEA. This is why I am grateful for the accessibility of travel that ASEAN partnerships have granted us, as they have widened my world and have opened up many great opportunities for adventure for me.

ASEAN has invariably affected my life as a young student and curious traveler. As an Economics major, it is hard to ignore the impact of the region’s integration. In the classroom, we study the economic effects of the development of this region as a bloc, and even in my personal work I directed the focus of my thesis to reflect the emerging changes in markets and macroeconomic behavior as a result of the integration. From an academic sense, ASEAN has and will continue to pique my interest in the global trend towards more relaxed borders and intercultural cooperation and collaboration.
On a more personal note, the development of an ASEAN has changed my worldview profoundly. From a young age I dreamed of traveling the world. My parents always indulged me in my interests and encouraged me to “travel” in any way I could then–whether it be literally or figuratively, through books, movies, or even food. By the time I hit high school I applied to all the exchange program I could apply to. I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be one of the Filipino delegates in a cultural study tour in Japan alongside many other ASEAN youth. The conference was about building bridges to promote peace among nations, and for the first time I got exposed to so many different people from all over the continent. I realized then and there that the things that fascinated me as a child were what made us different, but what formed lifelong friendships and bonds were the interactions I had with others, and the common ground that arose out of those encounters. Until now I hold the friends I made then close to my heart–and I have the ASEAN integration to thank because at the very least it makes me closer to my friends abroad, and also it assures me that my wish of seeing them again is not only a dream but also a possibility. May we continue to magnify what keeps us together and respect the things that make us different.

Being a part of the Association of Southeast Asian nations gives us the privilege of being able to travel across its member nations without much difficulty. Our family has taken advantage of this by travelling to places such as Kuala Lumpur, Bali, and Singapore. During our visits to these places, I realized the beauty of their sights and cultures. We saw some of the famous landmarks in the region such as the Petronas Towers and the Merlion. We also visited temples and other sacred sites such as Tanah Lot, Uluwatu, and the Batu Caves.
Because of the ASEAN, I was able to see the beauty and uniqueness of some Southeast Asian countries. I hope to be able to visit the other neighboring countries in the future to have a wider perspective and a deeper knowledge of the cultures in the region. Moreover, I hope to experience some of the other benefits and opportunities of being an ASEAN member aside from the ease of travel.

Now, I know more about the role ASEAN plays in creating a shared field of knowledge among the its members as grounds for improvement, innovation and technological advancement. In relation to my course specifically, there exists the Federation of the Institute of Food Science and Technology in ASEAN (FIFSTA). They hold the ASEAN Food Conference, ASEAN Quiz Bowl, and the ASEAN Best Graduate Paper Competition and ASEAN Best Product Exhibition. Because I belong to the Philippines, a member of ASEAN that participates in such events, I am motivated to pursue excellence as I take pride in our connections.
