Just some personal thoughts on the matter. Ten things one must remember about social media, the web, the Internet and its Netizens. It is a mixture of a number of things observed and learned through a bloody nose. It is personal but also something I would like to share – for the sake sharing.

1. It is not manipulation it is gentle persuasion. There is a reason why Social comes before Media. Spread and acceptance of a message is based on goodwill and relationships built. Hits and Statistics are only secondary to goodwill and relationships.

2. It is not just the number of posts or messages delivered. It is the message snd the ties – human ties – ties that binds people together.Social Media are social networks, blogs, forums, and a number things. Social Media is everywhere digital and non-digital.

3. A Business can have a successful social media approach if it approaches members of the social media with respect. A business or a venture into the social media must be three things – An Ambassador, A Missionary or an Evangelist and Mr Hopper. Why?

(i) As an Ambassador it represents the business and interacts with the community – establish good relations and gets intelligence. (ii) As a Missionary or Evangelist – it has to convert people and (iii) As Mr Hooper. the proprietor of Mr Hooper’s Store in Sesame Street was much beloved character in Sesame Street everybody loved and respected him, a business has to get the trust and confidence of the community.

4. You cannot control the message: You can persuade: Remember the Fable of the Sun and the North Wind

5. Nobody likes Bores and Spams.

6. Prizes and Rewards are a fine thing but it is not the only thing nor the main thing that attracts people.

7. In the realm of Social Media one must not be rash in action and deeds. Like Sun Tzu said, “Fast like the wind, Silent like a forest, Intrusive like the fire, Immobile like a mountain.”

8. Success can also lead to failure. Remember the saying Pride goeth before the fall: Pride comes before the fall.

9. Entertaining and Informative are adjectives or qualities of a good and viral message. They go together like peanut butter and jelly.

10. People are not stupid they can smell out a fake and leave. Reputation, trust and credibility lost is hard to regain.
